AI for AP? Your Financial Controls May Be at Risk

  • September 16, 2025
secure assured financial-grade ethical ai for accounts payable

Artificial intelligence is reshaping accounts payable (AP) automation, but not all AI is created equal. Some providers are rushing into an “AI-first” future, bolting untested generative AI onto their platforms with little thought to the risks. That kind of shortcut creates a sharp divide: SAFE AI that protects financial controls versus reckless AI that chases hype. DataServ takes the SAFE AI path: Secure, Assured, Financial-Grade, and Ethical.

With SAFE AI, your data stays yours, predictions are validated, tools meet financial control standards, and transparency guides everything we build. In AP, where sensitive financial data and ERP credentials are at stake, there’s no room for shortcuts.

A recent WIRED article explains why. It describes how “prompt injection” attacks can trick AI systems into leaking confidential data or executing malicious commands. While the example focused on ChatGPT, the same risk applies to any AI-powered tool, including those inside AP platforms. Still, some “AI-first” vendors are pushing these features without safeguards, putting clients at serious risk.

The Real Risks of “AI-First” in AP

When you process invoices, vendor bank information, and ERP logins, you’re holding the keys to the financial kingdom. An AI tool with access to this data, especially one linked to other systems, becomes a prime target for attackers.

If a risky AI implementation is compromised, the fallout could include:

  • Document Leaks: AP records sent to unauthorized parties.
  • ERP Credential Theft: Stolen logins enabling broader system breaches or ransomware.
  • User Account Takeover: Hijacked platform access for fraudulent activity.
  • Payment Diversion: Vendor bank details altered to redirect funds.

System Compromise: Even the provider’s code base could be destroyed, halting operations.

As AI evolves into “agentic” forms– capable of taking actions, not just answering questions– the danger grows. Imagine an AI agent changing payroll direct deposit info or vendor bank accounts without human approval. That’s a real-world fraud scenario waiting to happen.

The Risky Role of Connectors and Agents

In AP tech, connectors link software to ERPs, banks, and other systems. They speed up integration, but if an AI layer sits on top, a prompt injection attack could exploit that pathway to steal or alter data.

Agents (agentic AI) can chain tasks together autonomously. While powerful, in AP they could process an invoice, match it to a PO, and schedule payment without oversight. In the wrong hands, they could schedule fraudulent payments just as easily.

In short: combining AI, connectors, and agents without strict safeguards is like giving someone the vault keys and permission to use them.

Why DataServ’s SAFE AI Is Different

DataServ’s SAFE AI is built into a proven AP automation platform, not bolted on as an experiment. Our principles include:

  1. AI Isolation: AI only works with relevant AP documents inside strict boundaries.
  2. Security-First Integration: ERP connections use strong authentication and role-based permissions.
  3. Human Oversight: AI assists; it never bypasses human checks on payments or sensitive updates.
  4. Prompt Injection Defense: Built to block malicious instructions hidden in documents or messages.

Published Compliance Commitments: Operates in line with stated privacy and security measures, including GDPR adherence.

Why This Matters Now

AP departments already face relentless fraud attempts. Up to 97% of incoming communications are emails, many of them phishing attacks. Adding a poorly secured AI is like inviting cybercriminals to run your payment queue.

If your provider is selling “AI-first” features, ask:

  • How do you defend against prompt injection?
  • Can your AI alter payment or account details without human approval?
  • How do you secure connectors to ERPs and banks?

What privacy regulations do you comply with today?

If they can’t answer clearly, your most sensitive processes may be exposed to unproven, high-risk tech.

The Bottom Line

AI can make AP automation smarter and faster, but only if deployed safely. DataServ’s SAFE AI delivers the benefits without the reckless risks.

We’re not “AI-first.” We’re client-first. And that means your data, your ERP, and your payments stay protected. Always.
